His
dam, Richardson's Honey Chile was owned by Marie Poloson, mother of Grace
Larson.
His sire, Spiller's Gold Dust (TWHBEA
#451748), was as gentle as he was powerful. Abe Haynes, his
longtime owner, said small children could ride him around the
pasture bareback without a halter. He was a breathtaking deep gold
palomino with a snow white main and tail. He moved as good as he
looked. He was known for his natural running walk. He used "Goldie" to work cattle in the rough
Snake River breaks. While he was well known as a western walking
horse, but he was actually born in Tennessee. From there, Spiller's
Gold Dust became a resident of Idaho, British Columbia, and perhaps
other parts of Canada. In 1965 Spiller's Gold Dust was
sold to Abe Haynes of Moscow, Idaho. Due to illness, Blake felt that
his wife couldn't handle all of the horses and the breeding
operations. Gold Dust was sold for the sum of $600, which at that
time was quite an amount of money for a horse in this area. Abe was
a notable and avid TWH breeder, having thirty-five registered
broodmares . He bred "Goldie", as the horse was affectionately
referred to, to his own mares and to a considerable number of
outside mares, registered and grade. No matter what breed of mare
Goldie was bred to, he put the Walk on the offspring. Goldie was
kept in a twenty acre pasture with no halter on. Little children
would congregate at one particular corner of the pasture to sneak
rides. A child would grab him, climb on board , and old Goldie would
take each on a spin around the pasture and bring them back to the
starting point for the next turn. As Abe said, "How's that for a
disposition on a stallion? " When asked about Goldie's gaits, Abe
said, "He was a natural, dyed in the wool Walking Horse and as
smooth as glass." Abe used Goldie to round up cattle, rode him up in
the mountains, on the pack strings that he ran, and even showed him
a few times . "I never did put big shoes on him like everyone else
was doing, though. I didn't believe in it and besides - that hose
didn't need 'em." The Walking Horse News had reprinted this article
from the Walking Way November/December 1989 issue with the kind
permission of Judith Miller of Elk, Washington.
He produced 24 TWHBEA registered
foals between 1965 and 1970, siring his last foal at the distinguished
age of 23.
